Stephen’s work demonstrates a profound fascination with the natural world and is rooted firmly in the solitary contemplation of the sublime and awesome beauty of the landscape.
It is in this sense that these paintings may be considered as a meditation on the isolation felt by many of us on life’s journey. There is a strong connection with the Celtic tradition of ‘Thin Places’ and the belief that such places are sacred. This belief suggests that heaven and earth exist just three feet apart but in the thin places this distance is decreased still further. The work has echoes of his descendants and in the importance he places on his Irish heritage and to an ancient pagan past. A deep spirituality and love of nature is strongly felt in all the work.
Stephen’s paintings in oils, acrylic and water colour invite the viewer to consider the spiritual significance of the natural world.
