My work is a personal interpretation of landscape – it is a visual translation of my response to a viewed scene. The paintings and drawings evolve from initial workings not always depicting the complete view, but often taking elements within the subject to create a picture.
I realise these observations using drawn lines and marks with pencil, charcoal or pastel within the bounds of a small sketch. When I translate these images into paint, certain ambiguities and abstract qualities may emerge as I develop a picture that may remain in the work, but as the subject develops there is always a distinct connection to the view from which it derives.
I use acrylic paint on primed boards as I find the solidity of the board, and the speed of drying allows me to draw and lay down a surface with energy and expression that compliments the brushwork that comes later.
Studio also open 4pm-8pm on Friday 8th.
