Val Lawson’s contemporary abstract paintings are inspired by the shapes found in nature. She uses mixed media with multi-layering techniques and collage to create intriguing colourful artwork. Her favourite palette of blues and greens is interspersed by splashes of contrasting red or orange and balanced with neutral spaces.
She is a member of Eagle Gallery in Bedford where her work is shown in a series of exhibitions throughout the year. She also exhibits in Artisans in the Yard in Shefford.
Val is a self-taught artist who has dabbled with art for most of her life. She began to paint regularly and explore different ways of expression after retiring. The pandemic in 2020 triggered her transition from realism to abstract, as she looked for ways to convey feelings and emotions in her art and to share her concerns about ecology and the impact of modern society on the natural world.
For Open Studios 2026, Val is focusing on her Patchwork Geometry series. Inspired by aerial views of the countryside, this collection of mixed media paintings translates fields and hedgerows into a creative patchwork of colour and texture.
