Jessica Ozlo

Raffia tapestry woven on a loom through repeated, rhythmic weaving, building a dense structured surface over time. The woven grid is then reworked, allowing the material to shift from structure into more fluid, organic forms.

My practice is rooted in traditional craft techniques historically associated with women’s labour, which I bring into a contemporary context through an intuitive and exploratory approach.

I am interested in the space between structure and improvisation, where techniques provide rhythm and grounding while each piece evolves through gesture, chance, and material response. The work sits between control and unpredictability, order and organic growth.

My studio practice extends into painting and the making of natural inks and dyes, where materials are gathered, transformed, and tested over time. These processes slow the work down and shape how I think through surface, fibre, and material, creating a continuous dialogue between making, time, and transformation.

For Open Studios, I will be showing a selection of recent textile works alongside ongoing experiments in fibre and paint-based processes, offering a glimpse into my studio practice and the materials that shape it.
