As someone whose senses of smell and taste are much diminished, I rely on texture and colour to describe the world: I find that the haptic rhythm and optical feedback in my work is vitally important.
I see the world as a collection of shapes and voids, from the microscopic to the macroscopic and I am fascinated by the presence of art in science and science in art. I am curious about the patterns in nature as well as the physical forces at work in rock formations and erosion.
I also feel strongly that art should be present in the mundane: I love to make objects that I and others can use while getting on with the business of living. If my work makes someone stop and notice the texture, the shape, the weight of a piece, then I am happy.
In my current practice, I create memory anchors.
These are unique pieces of art in your home or place of work that create focal points to lift your mood, feed your soul, enhance your environment and provide a talking point for your visitors. My work provides an anchor to time and place, creating positive memories of association.
As human beings, we’re always drawn to colour and texture and seek to create work or leisure environments that stabilise us in an uncertain world.
I spend my days crafting art for you to hold and behold: to be used, enjoyed, contemplated. Each piece is made by hand and therefore unique.
I consider my tableware to be durable art and my larger pieces can become focal points in any setting.
