Sarah has worked from her studio in Harpenden for over 25 years. Her oil paintings celebrate the uplifting and restorative power of colour, line and mark to create a space for contemplation and reflection. They are guided by a love of music, nature, mark making and materials. She is drawn to aged surfaces, colour and changes in light and is fascinated by how these can affect mood and evoke memories. Sarah’s work explores the line between what we can instantly recognise and the unknown.
“In a fast-moving world where there is often no time to explore ambiguities, I am interested in creating spaces where I can enjoy the unknown, changing my mind in response to what is happening on the canvas, to reach something elusive, beyond reality yet tangible. My process is slow, physical and sensory. It focusses on the motion of mark making in response to music, evolving colour, and the malleability and smell of slow drying oil paint. This creates a joyful mindfulness taking me away from the noise of daily life.”
The physicality of making has always been a constant for Sarah, from making music as a classical musician, to working with glass, to arriving as an abstract painter. She trained as a classical musician in London and went on to become an architectural glass artist completing post-graduate studies at Central St Martins. She worked on projects for both private and public clients, including various care-giving settings and was awarded several national prizes for her work.
