Born in the Lake District, Jo was surrounded by nature and has always enjoyed drawing and painting for pleasure. Jo is a self-taught artist, using oil paint for 20 years, until doing a course a couple of years ago when she was introduced to acrylics. The flexibility this medium gives, enabling her to incorporate collage, and other materials into paintings has given her the freedom to explore more.

As someone who needs to surround herself with nature, one way to do this is by painting landscapes, which enables her to bring nature into her and others’ homes. She loves to use layers of paint and texture in her paintings to evoke a sense of depth and vibrancy. She often uses a palette knife with acrylics and sometimes gilding, focusing less on realistic representations and more on capturing the essence of her subjects through her artistic style. She hopes the observer of the painting feels the depth of the landscape and feels inclined to step forward to explore.

One of Jo’s other loves is music, in the last few years the titles of her paintings have been named after songs, either named for their physical relationship with a song or the emotional connection.
