Description for Website
Three years after my retirement as a Chartered Accountant in 2020 I decided to teach myself to paint portraits. Inspired by the atomic physicist Richard Feynman, who, in his middle age, wanted to do something creative and successfully learned to paint portraits, I resolved to do likewise. Two years later I entered two portraits into an art exhibition and, to my amazement, they were selected and displayed at Ware Regional College.
I began painting with acrylics on the dining room table, but switched to oils and an easel and commandeered my wife’s surgery as my studio – a switch from podiatry to painting. I am always experimenting and like to try different techniques, having studied internet videos and books along the way.
My favourite style of painting is to prepare a sketch using charcoal, and then overpaint in thin layers, with an underpainting in the style of the renaissance artists. I have also enjoyed some impressionist style works, copying Renoir and Zorn, working with a limited palette of only four colours, plus black and white.
It is great fun and I paint mainly for my own pleasure. I am interested in commissions, and have undertaken paintings for friends and family. I also have three paintings on display at my favourite Italian restaurant where my friend, the owner, asked me to do something on an Italian theme, so he has Marlon Brando as The Godfather, Al Pacino as Michael in the same film, and Robert De Niro as the boss in Casino.
