On returning to Australia he taught Drama at the Department of Education, Newcastle University and also gained the Graduate Diploma in Education, majoring in Art and Drama.
As an art teacher, he has explored many styles and art mediums.
Throughout Gerrard's career, he has kept an artist journal containing observations sketches and creative ideas to use for major artworks. These sketchbooks are full of small sketches of landscapes, portraits and still-life from the places visited. He is currently working on developing many of these sketches into limited edition relief prints while keeping the freshness and quality of line and tone seen in each sketch.
Along with his studio work, Gerrard has continued to create watercolour sketches of local places of interest. He is particularly interested in village churches and other features within the landscape.
