José’s multidisciplinary career spans three decades of innovation in architecture, product development, and industrial design. A pivotal moment came in 2006, when he won a competition to conceive and execute a monumental 40-ton urban sculpture in Hemel Hempstead. The work marked his first foray into transposing figurative forms into bold, large-scale abstraction. This transformative project ignited a deeper pursuit of fine art, reshaping his creative trajectory.
José’s practice thrives at the intersection of Conceptualism and Abstract Impressionism, where ideas take tangible form through unexpected materials. His work elevates discarded remnants into evocative art, balancing intellectual rigour with visceral appeal.
“Transparency” is a striking photographic series that captures intricate close-ups of the sculpture Crucify Butterfly—a work crafted from repurposed Perspex boards, imprinted with layered paint using plastic bags as a medium. Positioned to face the sun, the boards transformed under natural light, their surfaces alive with a luminous interplay of color. The resulting transparencies, each a fleeting chromatic phenomenon, were meticulously photographed, revealing ethereal diffusions of form and texture that seem to evolve into distinct visual entities.
This limited edition series is printed on Hahnemühle etching paper (300 gsm, 100% cotton, smooth matte), with each piece further individualized by the artist’s hand.
