Small pleasures

Sep 24 2021

Small pleasures — could be absolutely anything – a small finished piece, a process or technique that gives pleasure, a small animal or person who delights; a cup of tea or a glass of wine; possibly something that’s Close to home. Take a peek at what gladdens our artists’ hearts.

Small pleasures
jewellery by Nat McIntosh

Yvonne Estop-Wood

Art forms:
Drawing, Furniture, Graphic art, Mixed media 3D, Sculpture, Wood

Three-dimensional design, for furniture and sculptural objects, within which I seek shapes and geometries that delight me. I also make furniture by transforming everyday objects to create a narrative and quirky humour. Drawing is also a way of looking. I like pencil and pen, coloured pencils and pastels. And it is usually urban places that interest me most.

Emma Marsden

Stoneware Hare and Acrylic Landscape
Art forms:
Ceramics, Illustration, Painting, Willow weaving

My ceramics and paintings are colourful, fun and tell a story. My influences are illustration and a love of the natural world.

I make unique, hand built ceramic sculptures of animals and people with personality.

I’ve worked as a school teacher, a mural artist and an illustrator. Working with clay is pure joy and I’m constantly learning.

Please get in touch if you’d like to know more about my work or are interested in discussing a possible commission.

Macrame Wall Hanging by Amma Gyan

My macramé wall hangings are something I started make when I decided to change things up a little - they're my creative life blood. What I mean is that they free my mind to explore new designs and ideas.

They're often organic with no real plan for the design only the size and the colour is predetermined.

The finished design is somewhat of a mind map, an original piece of art inspired by the moment.

Sandy Campbell

Art forms:
Painting
Lost and Found - Mixed Media

Sandy Campbell is an abstract painter who creates multi-layered works that explore, materiality, surface and texture. Her work is firmly rooted in her experience of the declining urban landscape. The abandonment and decay surrounding her first studio in Luton influenced the development of the highly textured and complex surfaces she creates, as well as inspiring her 3D works using recycled materials. Exploring issues of identity and transformation, Campbell invites the viewer to absorb themselves in the sumptuous multi-layered surfaces before them, while questioning what lies beneath.

Murray Blacket

Art forms:
Painting - designing

I grew up in a small country town in New South Wales. So there was landscape all around me. I now explore this fascination in my painting, here in the UK. With such a wide variation of landscape throughout, there is always wonderful inspiration for the abstract landscape painter. I explore this in different degrees of abstraction - mainly in acrylic but sometimes in oil too. I am a late starter as a painter. I began around three years ago. Although I have been a wildcard entrant on Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the year, this is the first time I have exhibited any of my work.

Maureen Newell

Agapanthus
Art forms:
Painting

My name is Maureen and I am a Botanical Artist. I love to paint. Every day I pick up my paintbrush and delve into my many palettes of paint. I use layer upon layer of watercolour, adding depth and form as I go. It takes many hours and weeks, and sometimes months, before I am happy with the painting. Sometimes, I can just keep going with a subject, other times, I put it away and go back to it at a later date, with fresh eyes and inspiration.
I like to pick subjects from my garden, or my allotment, or from a walk in and around the village.
