Marian’s inspiration comes mostly from the natural environment, in particular open landscapes which are different to those she’s familiar with; ones that make her pause and research what’s going on beneath the surface. The finished work often evokes a sense of spaciousness, where elements of chance and surprise are balanced within a more structured composition.
Her work is built up of layers of marks and colours which are often created with a print process, sometimes on paper, other times on cloth which she may also stitch. Recently, Marian has been exploring earth pigments on linen, which brings the work even closer to the landscape that inspires her.
A visit to the Cambridgeshire peatlands earlier this year is inspiring her current work, which she is developing using both earth pigments on linen and print processes on paper. Each new body of work starts by experimenting with designs, materials and processes as she searches for something that embodies her inspiration and she’s excited to develop further. A phase she thinks of as a creative puzzle.
