Jan creates semi-abstract, atmospheric paintings, which arise out of an experimental process in mixed media. They are informed by observation but evolve intuitively from memory and imagination. She is concerned with expressing emotional and spiritual qualities, rather than imitative realism.
She works in series, creating a cohesive collection of pieces, before moving on to a new theme. Her process begins in her sketchbooks, where she experiments freely with mark-making, colour and composition. As an idea emerges, she begins to scale up and incorporate a wider range of materials, including texture medium, ink and collage papers that she creates herself.
Sometimes an idea invites investigation in three dimensions, as with her most recent series, so out comes the clay and sculpting begins.
Jan trained initially as a graphic designer, then went on to work in art education, teaching locally for many years. She is now working exclusively on her own art practice. She regularly exhibits at art fairs across the country.
