Colour, nature and energy are at the heart of my practice. Working primarily in mixed media and expressive abstraction, I use layers of paint, texture, and shape to translate memories, emotions and the quiet rhythms of the natural world into visual form.
After a long career in business, I came to painting as a way to slow down, to process experience, and to rediscover play. What began as a hobby soon became a daily practice of exploration. During the pandemic in particular, abstraction offered me a space of reflection and resilience. The act of pushing colour around, scraping it back, and rebuilding the surface became both therapeutic and grounding.
The spiral is a recurring motif in my work. Found throughout nature and recorded by artists since neolithic times, the spiral suggests growth, movement and continuity. For me, it represents a never‑ending but constantly changing journey, echoing my belief that change is the only constant in life. You’ll see this form re‑imagined in many of my paintings—sometimes bold and central, sometimes quietly embedded in the structure of the piece. My series often draw from natural forms: tidal patterns, patchwork fields, forest undergrowth, and wildflower meadows. Rather than depicting these scenes literally, I focus on the sensations they evoke—the cool weight of shadow, the shimmer of light on water, or the pulse of colour in a landscape glimpsed from a passing train. I build surfaces slowly, allowing accidents, drips and scratches to remain, so that each painting carries its own history.
I am drawn to vibrant, layered colour palettes that suggest emotion as much as environment. Contrasts of hard edge and soft blend, geometry and organic line, are my way of holding structure and spontaneity in the same space. Ultimately, my aim is to create expressive abstracts that bring joy, curiosity and a sense of calm energy to the home—inviting viewers to find their own stories within the work.

I am an Exhibiting Member of Eagle Gallery in St Peters Street, Bedford. My original paintings are in their exhibitions throughout the year with a selection of greeting cards. Some of my work (including cards and prints) is also available from ‘Artisans on the Yard’ gallery in Shefford.
In 2026, Val organised the first Open Exhibition at Eagle Gallery attracting entries from almost 40 local artists.
She has been a member of SAA for many years – primarily to benefit from their insurance cover – and her abstract ‘Reflections 2’ was Highly Commended in the SAA Artist of the Year competition in 2022.
