Melanie Harvey

I am self-taught, and I started painting in 2017.
After years of wanting to paint, I didn’t even know if I could.  I was a little scared to try. Art classes at school were a very long time ago, though I loved to draw as a child. I believe now, I was afraid of failure.

My uncle created and sold many intricate and beautiful paintings in watercolour and my mother was creative too, as was their father, my grandfather. Painting and art should be in my blood.

I picked up a brush and some acrylic paint in August 2017 focusing on animals, and, with kind and generous words from a successful local artist, I was encouraged and felt I could achieve something.

I now work primarily in oils. My portfolio has expanded, encompassing subjects from still life to landscapes, and waterscapes, whilst still enjoying portraiture of animals and pets.
I love captivating mediaeval villages, sweeping landscapes, and the changing seasons as the changing light impacts the landscape.
Painting simply because I enjoy it, and relishing new challenges, I now paint more instinctively.  I feel my own personal style is emerging and my paintings reflect this, in delicate and detailed realistic work, whilst retaining a painterly feel.

In all my work I am inspired by nature and travel, by childhood memories of beach holidays, and how humans have interacted with their surroundings over the centuries.
Over the last few years my work has appeared in British Vogue Magazine, Abode2, and other Condé Nast publications, and I have exhibited at several locations across the south of England stretching from Cambridge to the Cotswolds, including the prestigious Broadway Arts Festival.  I have some of my work currently in a gallery in Cornwall.

I have won several awards both at physical exhibitions and in online competitions.  Ever learning I look forward to trying out and experimenting with a new medium this year
