I am a contemporary l painter living and working in St. Albans, who is inspired by the land and seascapes of Australia and New Zealand . My paintings are a personal response to the visual forms, colours textures and atmospheres of the landscapes that I work in. I work intuitively to begin with on several pieces at the same time forming a series, using oil paints and cold wax medium on wood panels. This allows me to see what is working so that I can expand and develop my ideas, eventually forming a visual dialogue. I build several layers of paint, drawn marks, and either visual or physical texture. in the form of organic shapes depicting the landscape. The emergence of previously hidden imagery and flashes of colour can be achieved by methods of either scraping back with various tools , or by using solvent reduction. This is an exciting process, and I enjoy the aspect of allowing the interaction of spontaneity and control, adding energy to the painting. I may use photos for colour reference or small sketches for composition, but generally rely on memory and emotional responses drawn from the landscape/ seascape I am referencing. As the painting develops I take a more critical approach, refining and resolving. whilst striving to keep the energy of the marks. I would like to think that my work evokes a human experience of the land, rather than it’s physical presence, which is my offering to the viewer.

Most of my year is busy as an artist, both in the form of teaching and also within my own art practice. It has been quite an exciting year also, scattered with the ups and downs of an artist’s life.
In 2023, my work was accepted at the Hayden Gallery in Marlow, a really nice space for showing artwork together with some successful sales. Sadly in July 2025 the gallery closed and is now replaced by the Cotswold Contemporary Gallery. However, I am also exhibiting in galleries in Somerset and Dorset. I also enjoyed supporting the local community exhibitions, Ayot, Kimpton and Hertford.
July 16 – 24th I was in Cheltenham with fellow artist Clive Patterson at the lovely Spring Gallery for a shared exhibition “2 Hemispheres.” This was an informative experience, we both had very positive comments on our artwork and met some very interesting people during the week.
Finally, a lot of preparation for Open Studios this year, I am very much looking forward to this event. It is a great opportunity to meet new artists to share ideas, and also to give the general public an opportunity to view a range of artwork throughout Hertfordshire.
