GERRY WILMER

I love sketching outdoors using pen and watercolour in a small book. I draw across the binding and on both sides of the paper.I love being in woodland and drawing trees, and I also love the sea. My Father came from Brighton and I spent many happy times as a child with him and my siblings, playing on the beach. He gave me a great love of nature. He liked my sketchbook drawings better than any of my larger works, and before he died he told me I should ‘Do Something With Them’! I since found an amazing printer who has reproduced some of my sketchbook drawings as Fine Art Giclee Prints.

I also use the sketches as my starting point to paint from, sometimes using acrylics on large paper initially, before moving on to using oil on canvas. I enjoy stretching the canvas myself and then priming and sanding the surface before I begin painting.  The acrylic paintings are painted very freely. The oil paintings are a much slower process, often painting over and over, which can take me months, or even years to complete!

The wonderful printer, Steve Bockling, who prints my sketchbook drawings, [ The Picture Maker], is currently realising his own dream of making an artists hub in Watford. I have been taking framed and unframed prints to him to show in his new gallery, and I have also taken some of my larger oil paintings and big acrylic works on paper to him to display. I am excited about his new gallery, as it will have a coffee bar, places to sit and enjoy the art work on display, and meet up with like minded people! It is a short walk up Station Road from Watford Junction Station. On the St Albans Road, Watford.
