Andrew Read

I am an artist based in Hitchin in Hertfordshire.  With a career background in video, photography and animation, I’ve recently become really interested in drawing and painting.  I’m visually impaired (basically I have a progressive condition which has been slowly narrowing my field of vision) and in September 2025 I started a career break to give myself a proper chance to consider a new creative career in art not reliant on my peripheral vision.

I draw every day with graphite and normally draw pictures of my family, based on photographs that I have taken.  My pictures mean something to me as a moment in time – in particular, I try to show my children’s interests and character in pencil, setting them in a scene and suggesting a narrative. I also paint pictures of my family using oil paints or acrylics, and am always keen to explore other media – charcoal. watercolour, pastels etc.

It was in 2023 that I rekindled my interest in art by taking art lessons locally, discovering that I had a previously unrecognised ability in figurative art – if I had only known it takes patience, resilience and commitment when I was younger!  Whilst I’ve sporadically painted all my life (often abstract or mixed media pieces), my last formal art education was A Level Art in 1995.

I have written an article about my experience of sight loss as a visual person with a long career in video.  Please do read the article on LinkedIn.

I have also further explained my career break in another article on Linkedin, here.
