Caroline Hoggarth – A Fold of Chairs
Caroline Hoggarth is a qualified upholsterer with over 16 years’ experience and a deep-rooted knowledge of midcentury design. She specialises in restoring and reupholstering classic pieces using traditional techniques, with a strong focus on craftsmanship, sustainability, and design integrity.
Her shop, A Fold of Chairs, is a carefully curated midcentury store and working upholstery studio based in St Albans. Alongside a changing collection of European furniture, ceramics, art, and lighting, the shop also offers a bespoke upholstery service for private clients and creative businesses. Each piece is selected or restored with care, aiming to preserve the spirit of the era while giving it new life.

This year, Caroline was a finalist in the Everywoman Entrepreneur Awards, recognising independent businesses with creativity and purpose at their core. Her St Albans shop, A Fold of Chairs, continues to grow as both a design destination and working studio, recently featured in Country Living and The Modern House.
Alongside a busy schedule of upholstery work, the team has been hosting design-led events, from Scandinavian-inspired Midsommar evenings to vinyl listening nights, bringing together furniture, music, and community.
For the past year, visitors have been able to see traditional upholstery techniques in action through the shop window. This ongoing project, Studio Window Series, will continue during Open Studios, offering a rare view into the slow, skilled process behind each piece.
