Welcome to Open Studios 2018
8th September—30th September
Our artists and artisan makers here in Hertfordshire guarantee an exciting three weeks. You’ll find painting, sculpture, printmaking, glass, photography, ceramics, textiles, jewellery, a blacksmith and much more waiting for you.
There are also additional local events and art trails – so keep an eye out locally for latest news.
How to spot an Open Studio: Look for our yellow bunting, direction arrows and banners outside venues. Whether you’re a seasoned or first time visitor, the bunting is like a friend welcoming you at the gate and saying come on in.
Free to visit: Each of our 68 venues is different, with a mix of working studios, demonstrations, exhibitions, workshops and more waiting for you. From early designs to finished pieces, you can see and experience work first-hand and perhaps take home something special. You might even be able to try something out yourself.
Using the brochure: Venues are numbered in colour-coded areas from North Herts round in a loose spiral to St Albans. Find studios or chosen artists by name or art form using the indexes, individual artist and venue descriptions. Use the map and handy planner pages help find artists by location, art form or open days and plan your own personal adventure trail.
Our Open Studios Showcase: This year we end the season with a 2-day Showcase at the newly re-opened St Albans Museum + Gallery. A selection of our amazing Open Studios artists will be there to welcome and inspire you with demonstrations, activities and their work on show.
Last year I set myself (in hindsight) the rather ambitious target of meeting all our Open Studios artists. Although I can now say that at first I was a little daunted, nervous even of stepping up to all those unknown front doors, I can honestly say that after the first one it became one glorious adventure after another. The warm and generous welcomes and sheer variety of art and experiences really were inspirational – if only I’d had enough time to visit everyone.
So, what are you waiting for? What will inspire you this year? What will you discover?
