From Digital Process to Painted Image (Mark Davies)

Digital oil painting of an elderly man in a blue jumper, sitting in a yellow armchair reading a newspaper with a pipe in his mouth, with bookshelves and a grandfather clock and a grandfather clock in the background

I’m a UK-based, self-taught digital artist creating paintings using a mix of software tools, with a focus on capturing the feel of traditional media. My work explores colour, texture, and everyday subjects, often inspired by people, places and objects. I combine digital techniques with a painting-based approach to build images that reflect both process and subject.

My creative journey began with traditional photography, using film and digital cameras to produce black and white and colour work. A turning point came while observing commuters on the London Underground, leading me to focus on candid, everyday moments.

I began capturing these scenes on an iPhone and transforming them using mobile apps, initially working quickly to produce finished pieces. Over time, this shifted into a more considered process, building images in layers and refining them through reworking.

My practice has evolved from mobile-based work to using desktop software, and now into a digital painting approach influenced by traditional methods. Each piece is available as prints, cards, postcards and mugs, adapted while keeping the character of the original image
