Ann Marie Whitton

My art has now changed and this year I have been exploring the theme of the ‘family landscape’. It had been an outpouring of drawings. Mainly created with acrylic and natural inks.

The main focus had been about my relationship with my sister and her family. We didn’t get on and had many years of silence. So my drawing reflects this time in our lives. It’s not all morbid, but a celebration of life.

You will see dancing figures, lots of water, the house we grew up in, animals, flowers and crying faces. This is my mind, my landscape and a man appears, he is me my shadow. He is a healing figure.

My inspiration often comes from old family photos, early renaissance art, the lovely Ken Kiff, Cecil Collins and Eileen Cooper.

I still make my copper sheds. These buildings reflect an inner feeling of nostalgia, spirituality, inheritance, life, death, the human condition, poetry and solitude. They are about taking and reusing resources from the landscape, by recycling found and inherited materials. ‘On The Edge’ Sculpture won the Sculpture Prize at the Letchworth Open in 2025.

I make my own natural inks from plants in my garden or from the kitchen cupboard. This obsession started during 2023 and I love extracting beautiful colours from nature. Then I draw with them using a stick.

Recently, I have been attending a HVA Collage Group based at Kingsbury Barn in St Albans, this has given me an opportunity to explore collage techniques at a deeper level, plus it’s great to be with other amazing artists.

This year I have been exploring new courses with the artist Kate Walters. With her guidance I have been able to explore drawing in a new and experimental way.

Please feel free to explore my website where there is additional work with printmaking and sewing. On my You tube channel I have created some mini animations, which is a new skill that I am teaching myself.
