I am an artist based in Harpenden, Hertfordshire. I am interested in creating work that shows a history, is sensory and evocative, and provides a breathing space in the hum drum of the everyday.
I am intrinsically drawn to colour and my visual vocabulary is developed through my love of the landscape and still life forms, especially vessels and plants. My paintings are inward journeys. A way for me to see and express more than any obvious reality, through the exploration of colour, shape, and line. I work intuitively with no preconceived idea of what each painting will be, enjoying the sheer poetry of colour and materials. Ultimately, throughout the making I am searching for a sense of balance through a process that reflects my fascination with the relationship between order and chaos. The conundrum is that this pursuit for balance and simplification is complicated.
My work draws heavily on my love of music and background as a classically trained musician with the many parallels that exist between music and abstract painting. I work predominantly with oils and am dedicated to mark-making. All my work is united by a tension between abstraction and figuration, revealing and covering, transparency and opacity, and gesture and restraint.
