The feel and style of my work reflects how I like to live – just the simple minimal life. We need to reflect on calmness, peace and joy. Often working on several paintings at one time in my studio in Kimpton, things occur from either the subconscious or as a direct response. A sense of curation is continually present in my practice – each mark I create is from a particular place and things I love along the way. Wood, especially old wood, is my preferred choice, alternatively canvas. Seasonal palettes are applied boldly with an element of process and control, then unearthed with mark making and sanding back. Drawn to the distressed and unfinished, focusing on form and space. The odd remnant of collage, plus relevant words can also be added. Always looking for that abstract minimal connection with blotches & tokens. Expecting nothing grand, just a simple naive composition of flattened shapes often overlaying distressed backgrounds, where the viewer can have their own interpretation.
Simplicity – space – blotches – tokens.
Inspired by artists Jean-Michel Basquiat for his graffiti style, Patrick Heron for his bold use of colour, Howard Hodgkin for his contemporary colour & space, and Barbara Hepworth for her minimalist sculptures.
