Stephen’s work demonstrates a profound fascination with the natural world and is rooted firmly in the contemplation of the sublime beauty of the landscape.
There is a strong connection with the Celtic tradition of ‘Thin Places’ and the belief that such places are sacred. This belief suggests that heaven and earth exist just three feet apart but in the thin places this distance is decreased still further. The work has echoes of his descendants and in the importance he places on his Irish heritage and to an ancient pagan past. His deep spirituality and love of nature is strongly felt in all the work. Using painting as a medium he brings to the work a knowledge of art practices to shape and transform what he sees. Stephen’s paintings in oils, acrylic and water colour invite the viewer to consider their own transient relationship with the physical world.
