After studying architecture in university, I was inspired to start painting, challenging myself to only use palette knives, rather than brushes to create textured floral artwork. My love for palette knife painting developed, as did my art, progressing from florals into landscapes and acrylics to oil. I now try to capture moments in nature through movement to create dynamic scenes.
I produce diverse, contemporary textile and mixed media pieces, based on my interpretation of the world around me, which I often layer with a twist of fantasy.
I am almost entirely self-taught, apart from partially completing a City & Guilds correspondence course in Creative Embroidery several years ago.
A lot of my inspiration comes from reading books and I have a particular love of fantasy - ranging from old fairy tales, dragons, castles and other magical realms, to science fiction influences and alien worlds.
There is often a story in my head relating to the pieces I make and I try to breathe life into my imaginings by using colour and the textures of different media to create the look and atmosphere of the piece.
I want to share my quirky version of the world and to invoke in viewers of my work, a sense of strangeness and wonder.
Having studied Advanced Diploma of Fine Arts, and Diploma of Watercolour, at School of Continuing and Professional Studies at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Janet then further advanced her study and graduated from Master of Expressive Arts Therapy.
With her experience, art becomes not only a technique, but also a language to communicate with others. She is dedicated to bringing the tradition and culture of her hometown, Hong Kong, to the people in Watford, UK.
I started drawing again in 2021 and left teaching in 2022 after a 14 year career when I rediscovered my love for drawing. When I was at school I never felt I could draw something just because I liked it and felt restricted by what was expected. I am an animal lover and my pieces focus on the wildlife that surrounds us and the odd pet portrait or two!
My work is immensely detailed and takes many hours to complete. I have a passion for looking at the minute details which take my complete focus as they can be complicated and intricate. My pet portraits brings out the personality or the animal and make an excellent keepsake. At Open Studios, I will be there working on my current pieces demonstrating my process but I'll also be available to chat.
I will have a variety of originals, prints and cards on display which will be available to be purchased or just enjoyed. Come and talk to me to find out more about me, my work or how to commission a piece.

I look forward to welcoming you to the Open Studios at Henderson Hub at Abbots Langley where I will be exhibiting with a group of lovely artists. Very convenient parking and a lovely cafe on site. See you there!
I’m an amateur & self-taught artist, I always enjoyed creating artwork since I was little and I love to use my imagination mostly. I love painting with acrylic on canvases, and sometimes create 3D layers with it. I also enjoy drawing facial expressions and add details on my own thoughts into the art. I sometimes love to paint on different backgrounds, such as books.
I practice Art as a Hobby, I try to enjoy it as much as I can and use it to improve myself on daily basis. Art is a very special form of art, it makes me feel safe within my own imagination and thoughts in which I can bring to the world, and inspire people along the way.
I would love to share my work with the world and make people smile, feel at ease, spread calmness and joy!
I've been painting since lockdown as an online member of an international group of artists headed by professional Dutch artist Renate Van Nijen. I gave up painting after I failed to get into Art School, opting for shorthand/typing at The Royal College of Secretaries which my mother felt might be a better bet when it came to earning a living. Although my professional career encompassed design and print, marketing and PR, drama, writing and composing, those first brush strokes after 40 years took courage. What emerges is my childhood in Africa, my fury at the suppression of women, my fears for our beautiful planet, love and loss. I'm fascinated by the faces of everyone I meet. Their eyes follow me in my dreams. A blank canvas is exciting and terrifying - one never knows what or who will emerge. My love of colour, life experiences and irrepressible curtiosity (as Kipling put it) fuse into my imperfect style of art. Will you share my journey? www.shakespearesauntie.co.uk/art.
