Helen’s paintings are atmospheric ‘other worldly’ sea and cloudscapes which have a powerful sense of light, mystery and drama. She seeks to capture and enhance elements of nature’s awe-inspiring beauty which can be calm and serene but also menacing and hazardous. Memories and photographs of travel and sailing experiences provide the starting point for her work which then evolves towards abstraction. She focuses on the way light interacts with sky, land and water - both vast expanses of sea and intricate salt marshes and tidal channels with their ever-changing patterns. Colour, tonal blending and expressive brushmarks convey different moods and weather, both calm and stormy. Her work often has a strong horizon which seeks to take the viewer into distant places.
