Surf and turf

Sep 27 2021

Surf and turf — never mind the steak and seafood combo (unless it’s a particular type of still-life) – our creatives have turned their attention instead to the sea and those white breakers, lovely green lawns, or, perhaps, even horseracing or other turf associations. Let them show you their imaginative interpretations of this theme.

Maureen Newell

Agapanthus
Art forms:
Painting

My name is Maureen and I am a Botanical Artist. I love to paint. Every day I pick up my paintbrush and delve into my many palettes of paint. I use layer upon layer of watercolour, adding depth and form as I go. It takes many hours and weeks, and sometimes months, before I am happy with the painting. Sometimes, I can just keep going with a subject, other times, I put it away and go back to it at a later date, with fresh eyes and inspiration.
I like to pick subjects from my garden, or my allotment, or from a walk in and around the village.

Even Cows Get the Blues

Magdalena is a self taught artist with a background education in philosophy. Her paintings evolved around magical realism combining elements of everyday surroundings with a motion of secrecy or sacrum beyond the visible realm. In this context working with a paint brush is a colourful act of ontological curiosity towards the world rather than just an aesthetic expression. It is a way of capturing things in their existence, where colours are attempts to define reality in her various shapes and dimensions.

Foraged finds from forests and headlands, woven into salient memories of childlike wonder. My work is a celebration of the natural environment, created as an antidote to viral and technological displacement.

Alex Hamilton-Bray

Art forms:
Glass, Jewellery

With a passion for glass, attention to detail and a reluctance to back down from a challenge, Alex, from Sandridge based Heartwood Glass, not only creates bespoke handmade fused glass art, splashbacks and memorial jewellery, but following ‘school’ in Murano pushes the boundaries of heat and gravity to control, blend and shape molten glass in a flame.

What started out as an outlet for creativity, has progressed through continual development alongside glass masters from around the world, to crafting contemporary glass designs inspired by playing with light, nature and the desire to keep advancing within the glass medium.

Heartwood Glass brings ‘Glassy Love’ to all through individual pieces crafted with love and attention to detail, encouragement to get out and about in Herts and find “HeART Abandonments” or for those that want to try the medium through face to face, make at home or virtual workshops created to suit all ages.

High Violet, oil on canvas

Exhibition of contemporary landscape paintings and Open Studio.
Oil, acrylic, watercolour & pastel painting. An interest in the spiritual notion of ‘Thin Places’ where in the Celtic tradition such places are sacred. The paintings respond to the local landscape, but also to the ancient landscapes of Ireland and the natural beauty of the North Norfolk Coast.

Sally McIver

Art forms:
Painting - designing, Mixed media 2D, Painting

Come be refreshed through art and the beauty of nature at this inaugural exhibition in the stunning surrounds at Spring Meadow Farm. This is truly joyous, uplifting art to lift the soul and counteract the challenges of our recent times. Sally is currently working on a new collection for Open Studios inspired by the natural light, rich colours and varied seasons of the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Her style is loose and vibrant, bringing new life and perspective, often with an incandescent spiritual dimension to bless you, the viewer, as you contemplate the colours and imagery. Cards, prints and originals, framed and unframed, are available, as well as commissions. Take the opportunity to find out about the Art Experiment, Sally's innovative new project which explores whether a painting can actually enhance wellbeing, through fostering a sense of gratitude. It's easy to park at Spring Meadow Farm and there is plenty of space to enjoy the tranquillity and beauty here.

Lorna Brown

Art forms:
Drawing, Mixed media 2D, Painting
S'Agaro Beach oil on linen, 40 x 40 cm.

My focus is oil painting and drawing (with some minor deviations). The crux of my work is mark-making: either via impastoed, gestural oil painting, or through more intricate monochrome mixed media drawings. Subjects include landscape, interiors and still life – (arguably all landscapes). The landscapes are often developed from panoramic scenes with unreachable horizons or, by contrast, the familiar view from a window repeatedly painted during changing light and seasons until the more abstract qualities emerge. My work is figurative in so much as it is the visual (form and/or colour) that inspires me, but it is the creation of atmosphere and sensation, rather than representation, that is key.
I work from a studio in Baldock and have exhibited both locally and nationaly including 3 times in the Royal Academy Summer Show. Artists Bomberg, Auerbach, Diebenkorn, Sheila Fell and Anabel Gault have been inspirational to me.
