Smoke and mirrors

Sep 28 2021

Smoke and mirrors — is where artists ‘fess up to obscuring something, embellishing, or using a technique with the intention of deceiving or confusing the eye, even if they do it through a conscious use of trompe l'oeil rather than an attempt at a cover-up.

Alex Hamilton-Bray

Art forms:
Glass, Jewellery

With a passion for glass, attention to detail and a reluctance to back down from a challenge, Alex, from Sandridge based Heartwood Glass, not only creates bespoke handmade fused glass art, splashbacks and memorial jewellery, but following ‘school’ in Murano pushes the boundaries of heat and gravity to control, blend and shape molten glass in a flame.

What started out as an outlet for creativity, has progressed through continual development alongside glass masters from around the world, to crafting contemporary glass designs inspired by playing with light, nature and the desire to keep advancing within the glass medium.

Heartwood Glass brings ‘Glassy Love’ to all through individual pieces crafted with love and attention to detail, encouragement to get out and about in Herts and find “HeART Abandonments” or for those that want to try the medium through face to face, make at home or virtual workshops created to suit all ages.

Maggie Birchall

Jewellery

Magwitchery unique handmade jewellery designed and made by Maggie Birchall. Maggie is a silversmith and jeweller, designing and making unique jewellery in her small studio just outside Ware. She uses traditional silver and gold smithing techniques combined with vibrant natural gemstones to create pieces with a BoHo meets Neo Gothic meets Pre-Raphaelite vibe, whilst maintaining a contemporary feel. She loves to make wearable statement pieces full of sparkle and colour, with designs based around natural forms and shapes. Maggie will be showing a variety of pieces and collections from the unusual, but easy to wear, everyday to attention grabbing statements. She will be sharing some of her work-in-progress pictures and is happy to talk about the techniques used to create her pieces. Commissions and bespoke requests are welcome.

Jane Russell

Art forms:
Ceramics, Collographs/Linocuts, Drawing, Mixed media 2D, Painting, Sculpture

Redbourn Road is shut for 3 months, but you can still access my studio. From Redbourn, ignore the closure signs and keep going - studio on right before bends. From St Albans, pass the Praewood Arms and chevrons - turning is next sharp left. There is bunting at the turning on the Redbourn Road.

I am a local St Albans based self-taught artist and ceramist. I use a variety of mediums and subjects in my artwork and enjoy the challenge of new and different projects. I have however steered towards using acrylics for many of my portraits as I find them more forgiving. My subjects range from abstract to impressionism and include a range of other skills and techniques. I use different mediums and tools to achieve effects. I am also keen on ceramics; throwing and modelling pots, animals etc. I have my own wheel to enable me to throw, space to hand build and bring the two together. I also combine my art and ceramics adding artwork to the pottery pieces.

John Ridge

colour wheel
Art forms:
Computer arts, Graphic art

I have been playing with vector graphics since the late eighties. Vector graphics can be reproduced at (almost) any size with no loss of quality.
Recently I realised that they have a lot in common with the geometry of compass and rule, an technique that was used in the creation of diverse works such as Stonehenge and, Celtic mirror and medieval manuscript decoration. Some of my work is based around the square and compass. Some of it 'just happened'.
