I'm an engineer, a builder. First I collect ideas, images and things, then I play around. Finally, I assemble. It could be a real or imaginary townscape, asemic writing/shapes or paper and found materials re-imagined into, well, a final piece. Sometimes I start with a specific idea, sometimes the journey dictates the outcome. Always, always, the journey is important and the outcome underpinned by research.
A lifetime of engineering, languages and art, alongside natural and built environments all inspire and inform my practice. I love that information and physical objects can be put together in so many ways and at the same time experienced so differently by individuals.
All around me I see everyday items and scenes that can be simplified, abstracted, built or viewed ‘differently’. To me, each transient image or object is just one possibility, somehow frozen at that fleeting moment in time. My work is an intrinsic combination of research, engineering discipline and creative freedom.
