13n Jules Thomas at Kingsbury Artists

When I studied Fine Art In Sydney, we often made trips out to the desert regions of Mutawintji and Kinchega, Australia. Out in the desert, the tracks and trails made by the original inhabitants come to life and the Aboriginal system of ‘mapping’ the land suddenly makes sense. I am intrigued by the Aboriginal beliefs and legends, that speak about their land teeming with the spirits of their ancestors, and their deep connection to their unique environment.
I also travelled to the Australian coastal areas, which gave me the opportunity to draw and photograph very different land and seascapes. I made studies on the spot and developed them back in the studio, slowly building up each layer of images in stages.
The marks these first inhabitants made, as they carved out their lives and cared for their land for thousands of years, could be seen etched in the landscape.
At home in England, my passion for the Australian landscape continues.
I work in layers, often painting, drawing and using printmaking techniques on the same canvas, as I build up the imagery. From my research and memories, I abstract visually essential elements from the land or sea and try to develop semi-abstract works, that are still linked to nature. My aim is to try to capture the spirit of that place.
Come and see some of my work in Kingsbury Barn in St Albans during the first weekend of Open Studios.
