44a Bea Brown at Baldock Collective

Bea is an expressive painter working in oils, mixed media, drawing, and, more recently, lino cutting. She studied Fine Art at the University of Hertfordshire in the 1990s & ran a professional studio for 5 years until 2003. After that she retrained as a milliner & worked in a professional capacity until 2020, at which point she officially ‘retired’ & took the decision to return to painting. She began with observations of fungi on the woodland floor & still adds to this series periodically. Bea enjoys working outdoors & this has resulted in an ongoing series of work she calls ‘Curious corners’ – personal interpretations of little idiosyncratic pockets of the landscape that speak to her when she comes across them. Bea says “Drawing is also important to me. I have always felt that good drawing underpins a successful painting and I choose to keep up the practice and attend life drawing sessions”. She has also made some linocuts this year (drawing again in a way), commenting “I really respect those artists who make this art form look effortless. It really isn’t, and for me it is all a ‘work’ in progress. I think that everything I work at, find fascinating or curious, and yet find difficult becomes ‘my challenge’ and I don’t give up.”
As well as the above subjects, Bea also likes to paint seasonal flowers from her beloved garden – another theme she adds to regularly.
See her at work on Wednesdays & Fridays in The Old Town Hall during Open Studios.
