13b Antonia Servadei at Kingsbury Artists

Sewing creatively has been a passion all my life. I love handling fabric and figuring out what I can do with a piece of cloth using appliqué or patchwork or making clothes. Digital printing came later on and with this a whole new journey of possibilities. I draw and paint by hand then scan and work on the artwork digitally; other times I create a pattern entirely digitally or it can be a combination of sketching by hand then colouring on the computer. Block printing with a combination of acrylics and dyes on paper are another way I like to explore pattern. I have always been drawn to colour and this can often be the starting point for a project. One of the advantages of working digitally is the ability to easily explore colour in different combinations and experiment with layers. Geometric patterns have been a constant theme in my work and recently I have been taken with square shapes. The square gives a sense of stability and order, balance and equilibrium. It is considered a symbol of perfection and completeness. The square is symmetrical and balanced, representing harmony, wholeness and unity. This form has a constant presence in my work and this year as part of my open studio I will be setting up sewing machines to work on a collaborative textile piece exploring squares in different combinations using a variety of different materials. Visitors are invited to participate by having a go at sewing or offering their own perspectives and ideas on how the piece should evolve.
My work will be on show in the historic Kingsbury Barn in St Albans during the weekend of 26th-28th.
