My paintings are a result of my search for silence and solitude; evoking a sense of place, fleeting time and the subtle changes on land and water, light and sky. Needless to say I’m fascinated by landscape and the experience of being exposed to vast spaces.
I work in a semi abstract way, exploring the balance of subdue contrasts, tonal values and gestural marks. I like my visual language to be fluid and free, and my painting process takes different stages. From mood setting with colour tones, through a process of observation by defining painted areas with washes, building layers with glazes, to an interpretation of my surroundings with lines and mark making.
I frequently look for cold colours & melancholic moods, to capture light and time, the disruption and sense of being lost; the unperfected state.
I aim to express and provoke an emotional response, one that leads the mind beyond what the eye sees and the senses perceive… Wind, air, cold, rain, mud, ground, dirt, hot, moss, mist, white, blue, green and grey.
