Richard paints seascapes and landscapes in a semi-abstract impressionistic genre, which reflects his coastal upbringing and love of the sea. His boyhood upbringing and lifelong love of the sea are reflected in his artistic expression. The relationship between art and poetry, especially of the sea, is reflected in his work. The ambience of his painting is mainly the Hampshire and Dorset Coast from the Solent to the Isle of Purbeck and the dramatic Jurassic Coastline further west. Nearer home in Hertfordshire, he seeks to capture the spirit of the Chilterns and surrounding areas in Bucks and Beds. He paints mainly with a palette knife in acrylic and oil in his studio and en plein air. He has exhibited at gallaries in Christchurch and Lymington and at numerous art festivals in Hertfordshire and on the south coast.
