Biography
Val paints intuitively, using colour, contrast, texture and shape to develop expressive abstracts.
She works in acrylic mixed media to create series in which the colour palette or a theme are the common factor.
Most of her work is totally abstract inspired by things and places she’s seen – in everyday life or on holidays. Sometimes she depicts a quirky view of a familiar object or adds a touch of fantasy.
Val enjoys experimenting and playing with materials, tools and techniques. If she likes the effect, it may then be used as in her future work.
Art and creativity have been constants throughout Val’s life, fitted around the demands of career and family until she retired. In recent years, her hobby has become a passion and she spends time most days on her art practice. Her skills and knowledge have been developed on short courses and in workshops. She takes inspiration from artists she’s worked with as well as famous painters she loves: Van Gogh for his use of colour; Monet for mark-making; Delaunay for shapes and tones.
In 2020, Val used an exploration of colours and colour psychology to tackle depression. As well as helping her to cope, this project triggered a more introspective approach in her creative practice, with a shift to abstract work. Her focus now is on creating colourful expressive abstract paintings.
