Biography
I paint to express and chronicle my internal and sensory world. I am led by my materials, memory and love of music, with my original training as a classical musician an important influence. I am interested in how the tactile and visceral qualities of paint can capture the intangible and create atmosphere through touch, symbols, marks, and hues in the same way that music does through melody, harmony and rhythm. Informed by my work as a glass artist and modulations in colour and light, I am drawn to transitory moments, to nature and the passing of the seasons, and to objects that contain a connection to the past or show a patina of shifting marks and colour. These resonate, holding a sense of something that is greater than myself.
I love the physicality and malleability of oil paint with its slow drying qualities, depth of colour and versatility. I incorporate cold wax when working on panel and paper, and oil sticks allow me to bridge the gap between painting and drawing. I naturally work quickly, drawing gesturally but I crave quietness, restraint, and space. A resonant image emerges when I sense an equilibrium between these two states, with marks and colour triggering emotive associations.
