I knew I wanted to be an artist ever since I could hold a pencil. I’d spend ages observing the world around me and trying to capture and process what I’d seen. At 7 my mother took me to her homeland, Uruguay, for the first time and my senses were enlivened by the rich farming heritage and vibrant culture there. It seemed like I was related to everyone, and they were all artisans, like me. Everything that was farmed was used and nothing was wasted. It felt honest. Simplistic. Harmonious. The colours of carnival seeped into rich tapestries hanging over the mantlepieces of family homes and scents of fresh leather, wool, wood and sea water filled my nostrils. It awakened my soul. Peach stones were polished into necklace beads. Seedpods charms for earrings. And the raw ingenuity stayed with me.
As I made my way through contemporary fine art with a degree in my twenties, worked the carnival scene and later studied for an MA in art therapy I realised that my first love, was the only one that mattered. I went full circle. Back to the simple responses of a child in their environment. Registering tacit delight by sculpting and weaving in a technological world of increasing sensory deprivation.
I currently live in Watford with my husband and 2 small children. My studio is in Croxley Green where I reflect, run classes and events.
I produce bespoke, woven wall art and sculpture using a variety of natural, recycled and found materials for public spaces and home interiors. I hope my work reflects a passion for conservation and genuine awe of the natural environment. If you would like to collaborate, commission me or find out more about my practice and upcoming projects you can contact me at victoria.culf@yahoo.co.uk on Facebook or call me on 07540 959934. (If I don’t answer immediately I may be musing, with my kids or on a site specific job. I’ll get back to you as soon as I can).
Studio visits by appointment only.
