I am an artist, maker and tutor working predominately with ceramics and textiles. My work is influenced by my biracial heritage. Being of Trinidadian and British heritage, I have always have been really interested in the similarities and differences between cultures, traditions and beliefs.
As I have grown up, I have always found myself attached to certain objects, intrigued by colour and fascinated by texture; not just because of their aesthetic or value but because they evoke memories that remind me of significant people and hold little snippets of my heritage, my history and family traditions. I hold these objects as treasures that I am able to talk about and use with my own children to say ‘You know this object, it belonged to Grandma or Grandpa and they brought this in ……. when they moved house. It becomes almost as relevant as having a picture or letter to share.
In my work, I love the opportunity to play with colour, texture, form and movement and this is combined with an underlying desire to explore story telling and the notion of the treasured object, imbued with memories and meaning, imparting information about one’s history, cultural heritage and family traditions.
