What is Open Studios?
Herts Open Studios, our flagship county-wide annual event takes place during September. 2017 dates are 9th September - 1st October.
Professional and amateur visual artists, makers and designers who live or work in Hertfordshire are very welcome to apply.
Artists open their own homes/places of work or get together with other artists to welcome visitors at specified times over the three week period. From working demonstrations to exhibitions, solo to larger group events, each venue and experience will be different. It’s a once-a year opportunity, with thousands of Open Studios visits to see artists in action and find out what they do.
If you’ve been part of Open Studios before, you’ll see some exciting changes, with more emphasis on on-line information, marketing and changes to the hard copy brochure/trail leaflets. We’ll be working on designs for print materials in parallel with registrations and final entry proofing.
We’ve also listened to feedback about groups and our new price structure for this year makes it easier to take part.
The full Open Studios campaign and signup starts in March, and will run until Tuesday 2nd May
Herts Visual Arts have an Open Studios Project Manager supported by Area Coordinator volunteers. As part of Open Studios, you will take part in area meetings, get to know other artists and also play a part in your own local area marketing.
Open Studios is publicised via a targeted media campaign with details of each artist, their work and opening hours available online. Supporting print materials, designed in parallel with registrations and final proofing, are widely distributed across the county, for example to libraries, museums, tourist information offices and commercial outlets. Marketing materials will be ready in plenty of time for you, alongside HVA, to market your own event and make good use of your own networks and on-line presence.
When applications have closed, you will be asked to proof read your entry prior to publication. As a participant, you will be responsible for meeting any deadlines for entries, proof-reading, changes etc. Specific timescales and deadlines will be announced as part of the on-going organisation.
Everyone taking part in Open Studios instantly becomes part of their local network of artists working alongside HVA volunteers. These networks and Local Area Coordinators support everyone and are particularly valuable to artists new to Open Studios.
Before applications close, there will be 2 opportunities/meetings to get specific additional help, perhaps with your application, preparing an image or Open Studios itself. Dates for these meetings will be publicised later so please watch out for meeting announcements in your newsletter.
Please visit our contact page for details on how to get in touch with Herts Visual Arts, or if you are ready to become a Herts Visual Arts member you can join on-line.
Open Studios information will be available on line and also in print.
