September 2018

Here we are, the baking hot Summer seems to have vanished and we’re probably all dusting off the woolly pullies … and then, before you know it, we have Herts Open Studios on the horizon for another year.

This newsletter really is pretty much all about Open Studios – and Herts is already buzzing. In addition to excellent local news coverage, we have a big feature in this month’s Herts Life magazine illustrating just some of the breadth of creative skill and passion in our membership. The magazine features long-standing and very recent members, so do take a look.

Brochures are available on the web and also in print from a wide range of public places and of course from your local artists. This year it features a couple of handy pages for your own planning and notes too. Please take time to read through and visit as many fellows as you can – you’ll be making new friends and each visit will be worthwhile.

New for this year we also have an opportunity space at the newly refurbished St Albans Museum + Gallery. Some of our amazing Open Studios artists will be there to welcome and inspire you, and you’ll have a great chance to explore the new space too.

In the meantime, I’m planning my grand tour and I hope you are too. You may remember that last year I set myself (in hindsight) the rather ambitious target of meeting all our Open Studios artists. I really was very nervous of stepping up to all those unknown front doors but I can honestly say that after the very first one it became one glorious adventure after another. The warm and generous welcomes and sheer variety of art and experiences really were inspirational – if only I’d had enough time to visit everyone. I can’t wait for the 8th September – watch out for studio reports as I go, and I hope to meet lots of you on my travels.

Old hands will know to look out for our yellow bunting, direction arrows, and banners outside venues. Whether you’re a seasoned or first time visitor, the bunting is like a friend welcoming you at the gate and saying come on in. This year we have additional yellow pavement branding with lovely new vinyl banners and correx signs to help guide visitors in.

With 68 venues and over 150 artists, you’ll be spoiled for choice in the mix of working studios, demonstrations, exhibitions, workshops and more waiting for you. So, what are you waiting for? What will inspire you this year?

Remember to like, follow and share social media posts, use the hashtag #hertsopenstudios on social media and please share your own adventures for all to see!

OS participants: look out for the countdown and in-event posts and emails with hints, tips, news and more.

And after Open Studios?

There’s already planning afoot for our events next year – a January Conference, confirmed dates for our Big Art Showcase at the New Maynard Gallery, planning already started for another Big Art Fair in July and of course, Open Studios 2019.  Are you ready?  Let the adventures begin!
