Artist on File

LAUNCHING Artist on File, this issue takes a closer look at the work and practices of HVAF's Linda Gifford...

HVAF textile artist Linda Gifford is one of a select group of designers to show their work at Craft Central this month.

As part of the London Design Festival, Linda’s work will feature at the One Day Designers Sale in Clerkenwell on 21 September. The event will show interior products and distinctive pieces of contemporary craft by designers at the cutting edge of their discipline.

Linda established her design business in 2005 during HVAF’s Open Studios, but over the past year Linda’s work has rapidly grown in reputation for the originality of her designs.

Inspired by observations of the natural and built environment, Linda organises photographic and drawn elements into traditional repeats, then transforms them into complex and unique designs using Photoshop. The result is interior textiles, luxurious in design and rich in colour.

Linda, who trained at Central St Martins and the Surrey Institute, started out using Photoshop to produce designs as printed outlines that could be traced onto silk and then painted. Designs were then printed directly onto fabrics like silk, velvet and cotton canvas, to produce limited editions or create textiles to suit an individual client’s specifications and colours.

A versatile approach to work allows Linda to position herself in different ways for different markets. She is constantly exploring new ways of producing digital textile art.

As well as exhibiting one-off individual pieces at specialist fairs, Linda continues to build up a design range which can be produced through manufacturing or sold directly to manufacturers, and is also able to create bespoke designs for the home.

One Day Designers Sale takes place on Monday 21 September at Craft Central, 33-35 St John’s Square, London EC1M 4DS from 12noon – 7.00pm. Admission is free.

Catch up with Linda at her studio in Stanstead Abbotts during Herts Open Studios 2009 where you’ll be able to get a sneak preview of new work from her extensive range of digital imagery. Visit Linda’s website at www.lindagifford.co.uk
