Forthcoming HVA Events

The first two events of the year - our social at the Red Lion in Hatfield, and the Social Media Workshop in February were very well received.  Our next members event is a Photography Workshop that is being held on 2 April details follow, plus dates for your diary for the rest of the year.

*** This is a members only event ***

Members have said to HVA that they would appreciate some help in taking photographs of their art work, not only on a personal level, but also for their images to go on the Gallery pages on the HVA website and into the Open Studios brochure.   To this end we are delighted to be able to put on a workshop to help you do just that.

 Date: 2 April 2014
 Time: 7.30 – 9.30 pm
 Place: University of Hertfordshire
Presenter: Murray Freedman HVAF Member.    Murray works as a commercial photographer and graphic designer - his work can be seen at and at

Spaces are limited, offered on a first come first served basis Book now via the HVAF website in order to reserve your place.  The deadline for signing up is 12 March.

The University of Hertfordshire has kindly offered HVA a suitable room for the evening. You will need to bring with you one of your pieces of art, your camera, a tripod if you have one and a notebook and pencil.

We will meet in the Gallery space of the University and will be taken to the room by our contact at the University (so we don’t get lost!).  So, if you are planning to attend the workshop please note that you will have to be in the Gallery before 7.30.  Those who sign up for the workshop will receive confirmation and further logistic details nearer the date.

I am delighted to be able to inform you of our events programme for the remainder of 2014.  Please remember that if you want to come to any of the events you must sign up through the website.  Most of our speaker events are open to both members and non-members, with a fee of £5 for non members to attend, so do bring your friends along.   Where the event is member only, it is clearly listed as such.

We have already had an enjoyable social evening at the Red Lion Pub in Hatfield in January to start the year off. Followed on 19 February by another informative and enjoyable workshop by Adam Blackie on Getting the most out of Social Media.   The event proved so popular that we will be running a repeat in case you missed out!

On April 2nd we have the Photography Workshop as detailed above.

In May we will be running a repeat of the ’Getting the most out of Social Media’ workshop, date to be confirmed.

On 25 June we will be holding our AGM and Social evening 7.30–9.30pm  at Sharon Struckman’s gallery:  PS Arts.  Another opportunity not only to hear how HVA has done over the past year, but also to meet new people and have a jolly evening.

On 20 October I have arranged for Grafitti Artist and Gallery Owner/entrepreneur - Pure Evil to talk about his work.  Due to anticipated high demand for this event we have booked the Theatre space at Trestle Arts Base in St. Albans

Arrangements for the November talk are being finalised.  Our speaker will be Gary Nicholls.   Gary, by his own admission, has not been working in photography for all that long, but he is already an artist who has exhibited in London and has been involved in an exceptionally large piece of work, necessitating him travelling to a wide variety of destinations.  Gary will talk about the challenges associated with this type of commission and his very unique take on Steampunk photography.

In 2015 we already have lined up a published philosopher who is going to talk about Philosophy and Art.  Also a collector of Art who will talk about his collection, what it means to be a collector of Art and the collector’s relationship with Artists.

So, please keep your eye open on the HVA Website for when these events are released and do sign up.  Remember places are restricted at some venues and I don’t want you to miss out.  If you do sign up you will receive an email from me about 2 weeks before the event, reminding you that you have a place(s) and giving directions to the venue and any other relevant information.

As I’m sure you appreciate, this all takes time – I have some very willing members of the team that help make all these happen and run smoothly.  However, there is always room for more, so if you are interested in helping, please contact me
