INDIGO (PAINTERS NORTH) 'STILL LIFE AFTER BEN'
Indigo members gathered for an enjoyable workshop meeting at my home on 21st February. The brief was simple, "an afternoon of abstract drawing with a touch of collage, based loosely on the sort of Still Life for which Ben Nicholson was famous in the fifties". We were to take inspiration from his intriguing compositions of simple overlapping shapes, often 'flat' and transparent, with interesting negative spaces and bold accents of colour or shading.
Pots of pens, pencils, pastels, scissors, glue, paper, both coloured and plain, together with old magazines for cutting up, were laid out - and after some initial discussion and exchange of ideas, we were off ! The silence was deafening as all ten of us became totally immersed in our creations, aided by some timely refreshments - and the resulting artwork was incredible. Such exciting and varied interpretations; some using objects from around the room as their subject matter; others using imagined themes.
We held a lively critique at the end of our session and I think were all agreed that working together to encourage and inspire one another with a fresh approach, is a most enjoyable way to pass an afternoon !
