PICASSO LECTURE
'The Absinthe Drinker'

'The Absinthe Drinker' Picasso

On Thursday 10th February 2011, Margaret Davis gave us a very interesting and well-illustrated talk on Pablo Picasso his ‘Early Years up to WW1’.

Margaret is a NADFAS Lecturer and Art History tutor, she showed us images of Picasso’s work and of other artists work that influenced him.

At the age of 14 Picasso exhibited in Barcelona ‘Girl with bare feet’.

At 18 he visits Paris, it’s not long before he moves there. There were times of severe, cold and desperation.  He was influenced by the work of Matisse, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec and  Renoir we were shown examples of this.  Other influences were women, café life and African masks which all appear in his paintings.

His famous ‘Les Demoiselles d’Avignon’  was discussed showing the violent treatment of the female body and the masklike faces derived from his study of African art.  Our speaker touched on his Blue Period, his close association with Braque, which initiated the Cubist movement, but was influenced by Cezanne.

We heard stories about nicking a bust from the Louvre, wives and mistresses and portraits he painted of his agents.  Pablo Picasso's legacy lives on.

The Launch

We were welcomed into the gallery by Jodi and her husband, Mish, with refreshments and it was immediately evident how much time and effort she had spent elegantly displaying her work. The room was lit up with stunning artwork; many of which displayed gold embellishments which has become synonymous with her name.

Prices varied from £10 to £600. Beautifully hand painted cases for cigarettes, iPhones, iPods were displayed together with a selection of other gifts at affordable prices, perfect for birthdays or other occasions.

CERAMICS GROUP
London Gallery and Museum Visit

A number of the members of the Ceramics Group gathered at the British Museum on Thursday 10th February before crossing the road to the new Contemporary Ceramics Centre in Great Russell Street.  This was the opening exhibition in the new gallery and honoured the work of fifty leading ceramic artists to represent the last fifty years of the Craft Potters Gallery.
The Ceramics Group members were very impressed by the new gallery and much discussion took place as we looked at the work.  Preferences were expressed and technical information shared.
After spending some time in the gallery we returned to the British Museum where the group dispersed to seek out their favourite rooms and exhibits.  As a hand builder I can never resist another visit to the African section to see, among other things, those fantastic large coiled pots.

SOUTHERN PAINTERS GROUP

It was a lively February meeting - everybody had worked on the theme of  'that ideal holiday' and we discussed our work and our memories on the subject.

Edna Eckett had some wonderful paintings that she showed us that involved painting on location.  Each painting done with a time limit of 15 minutes. She explained how using a palette knife and Acrylic Paint can be very useful when you are outdoors due to the speed you can work at and the way it dries very quickly……I found this particularly inspiring.  In addition to the critique, we also discussed the difficulty of pricing our work.

Thank you to Frances Tompson for hosting the meeting.  Our next meeting will be in St. Albans on Wednesday 23rd March at 2.30pm
Please email painters@hvaf.org.uk if you would like to join the group.
