WANTED: New Chair for HVAF
AS Mike Willison, Chairman of HVAF for two years, prepares to discover what the word leisure really means and retire from his role next March, we look to the future to see what qualities a new Chair might need to carry HVAF into its next phase.
Mike Willison outlines the dynamic, growing organisation and the role of the Chair within it...
HVAF is a successful not-for-profit voluntary organisation, providing services to more than 300 professional artists, of many different skills in the county. It has grown since its formation 19 years ago, and is best known in the county for its annual four week Herts Open Studios event.
In 2009, 13,000 members of the public visited the artists’ Open Studios. The Forum organises and provides marketing and media advertising for this event. Other local exhibitions, events and meetings are organised by the leaders of the five specialist Art Groups.
HVAF has a developed web site, which illustrates the artist’s work and contact details on their gallery pages, as well as advertising members’ forthcoming events, which also feature in the electronic newsletter.
The incoming Chairman will have the support of a Vice Chairman, Treasurer and Secretary. The Forum is run by an 18-strong, enthusiastic, voluntary Organizing Group, each member having a specific role, or roles. This Group is assisted by a professional Coordinator/Project Manager, who has responsibility for the Open Studios event, assisted by 10 voluntary area coordinators, and other events.
The Forum has been going through a period of development; with the expanded web facilities; the introduction of the new electronic newsletter; and a move to increase the number of exhibitions held at different times in the year. It is a dynamic, growing organization.
The candidate selected for the role of voluntary Chairman/Chairwoman would ideally be retired, with a business or industry background. They need not be a practicing artist, but a keen interest in the Arts would be highly desirable. The Chairman/Chairwoman should be comfortable with the role of coordinating the activities of the Organizing Group members.
A successful candidate will be fully briefed about the organization, and assisted by the retiring Chairman.
Candidates for this position should send relevant details to <email@example.com>
