My background is biology, more specifically, genetics. As a mature student I have studied art to MA level; unsurprisingly my artwork reflects my working life in science.
I take inspiration from a range of sources. For example the spent insect chrysalis at metamorphosis and the genetic code used as a textual material. Currently most of my work references lineage based on the maternal transmission of mitochondrial DNA. This is interwoven with anthropological studies of ancient human cultures, which commemorate their (generally male) ancestors. I rework these traditions to reflect matrilineage based on female fertility figures. I mainly use paper, clay and plaster as these have a primitive feel to them. My pieces often feature repeated copies of sculptural elements to reference reproduction and DNA replication.
