Over 300 innovative designer-makers will be travelling from all corners of the United Kingdom to exhibit at Hatfield House, Hertfordshire from 10 – 13 May. Living Crafts is the country’s premier craft showcase with an enviable reputation for the range and high quality of design and with its lively festival atmosphere attracts many thousands of visitors each day.

This year Living Crafts is celebrating the renaissance of craft as an important part of our British cultural heritage in the Queen’s Jubilee Year while also recognising its economic significance. Robin Younger, the event organiser, comments “We are promoting the future of designer-made craft in the U.K. with immensely talented craft professionals whilst also giving newly qualified designer-makers the opportunity to launch their skills”

This vibrant show features both traditional and contemporary British, original craft with exhibitors demonstrating, selling their work and taking commissions. There are art lectures, masterclasses and ‘have a go’ workshops for all ages. Live music and entertainment add to the ambience and new this year are an award-winning steel band, tutored wine tasting and master storytelling.

Herts Visual Arts members will, once again, have their own tent in the centre of the showground.

Do come along and introduce yourselves - visit the Textile group on Thursday, Ceramics Group on Friday, Glass Group on Saturday and Sculpture Group on Sunday.

An exhibition about the delight in being beside lakes, rivers, streams and the sea is being held at Parndon Mill this month.

				ALAN BURGESS paints the great variety of ways land and water meet. He grew up near the Essex coastal marshes, an area where there is an ambivalent relationship between sea and land. Now, in the Stort valley he paints the river in various moods and how, in times of flood, the water slides over the land and brings the luminosity of the sky to the earth. "The completion of a painting can be seen as the resolution of opposites; solids and voids, warm and cool colours, movement and stasis. What better metaphor than painting the water's edge?"


				SUSAN ERSKINE-JONES' inspiration for her paintings comes from the area in which she lives including the nearby College Lake in West Hertfordshire. Early impressions and memories of the open spaces, the coast and the clear light of the South African Cape still strongly influence her work. Susan explores the relationships between the sky and stretches of water which reflect it. She says "I am interested in the borders, the edges and marginal states; in interpreting the delicacy, the chance and the strength that I see in the world around me. "


				DILYS HALLBONE'S delightful paintings and watercolours are of the seaside on sunny afternoons at Seaview, Isle of Wight.

				KAREN MURPHY'S glass dishes are inspired by water including tumbling waterfalls and the sea The pieces are fused and formed in the kiln and are enhanced by subtle additions of dichroic glass which change colour with the angle of the light.

Textiles are so often treated gently, wrapped and protected and carefully stored.

For this exhibition they are displayed outside - will the materials survive the elements ? .... and how well will they fit into the environment ?

'Lace 1' , Terry Frost 1968

To mark the onset of fairer weather Ian Rastrick Fine Art will be exhibiting a selection of original prints by the much loved Cornish based artist Sir Terry Frost (1915-2003). A pioneer of British abstraction in the 1950’s, Frosts vocabulary of beautifully coloured chevrons, discs, crescents, spirals and triangles have become instantly recognisable.

The exhibition will consist of approximately twenty works ranging from the iconic 1968 lithograph Lace 1, an image that was issued as a stamp by the Royal Mail in 2004, to the large woodcut triptych Timberaine 1 of 2001. Prices £650 - £3750.

RESORT is the result of two years spent photographing life at Butlin’s, Bognor Regis in West Sussex – one of only three remaining resorts in the UK. Anna Fox has captured the British at leisure, providing a vital and highly charged insight into the contemporary Butlin's holiday experience.

The series marks the 75th anniversary of Butlin’s: a British institution and established cultural phenomenon, with a very particular character, history and identity. Having attracted tens-of-millions of holidaymakers since its creation in 1936, Butlin’s popularity peaked in the 1970s, but, today it remains a thriving centre for family holidays and themed leisure breaks. The Butlin’s experience has always been rooted in a sense of community, extending the bonds of family and friends to embrace shared social activities that are truly democratic and accessible to all.

These values and aspirations are still pertinent today and the series recognises Butlin’s prominent place in the national imagination. Informed by John Hinde’s celebrated colour photographs of Butlin’s holiday camps from the 1970s which were highly choreographed records of the ritualised activities in the camps, Fox’s large-format colour photographs provide a fascinating insight into the family activities for which Butlin’s is celebrated.

Anna Fox has been working in photography for the past 25 years. Professor in Photography at University for the Creative Arts, her work has concentrated predominantly on documenting life in the South of England and has been both published and exhibited worldwide. Her work is included in a number of significant public collections and has been included in major group exhibitions such as: Through the Looking Glass, Barbican 1989; From Tarzan to Rambo, Tate Modern 2003; How We Are: Photographing Britain, Tate Britain 2007.
