It was when I was at a tree planting day at Heartwood Forest that I was given an entry form advertising The Woodlands Trust's photographic competition. I remembered that I had taken some photographs back in the Spring when I was exploring Heartwood Forest with a group of walking friends. VERSATILE FIRST ART EXPO IN RADLETT INAUGURATES 2012 HERTFORDSHIRE'S ART CALENDAR WITH A BIG BUZZ |
| It was only early January, a time when we are usually still recovering from the parties, the travelling, the family get-togethers and all the indulgencies that normally accompany the Christmas festive season, in other words, a sluggish time when we think: what this new year will bring…??? Well, for us artists and for all art-lovers, there was no need to question further: the First Art Expo at the Radlett Centre promised to start the year with a big bang. And it did! It was just 5th Jan and the works had to be brought to the centre. Doors opened only the day after. On 11th January there was the Meet the Artist Evening . Well attended, it was an evening of fun and laughter, when both public and artists had the opportunity to mingle and chat away about art techniques, inspiration, life…, who knows what else …. over a cup of coffee, or more likely a glass of wine. Then, just a few days later, on Sunday 15th Jan, there was the One Day Art and Antiques Fair. At this occasion, exhibitors included not only artists but also antique dealers. |

There were also cute and charming limited signed editions of Beryl Cook O.B.E., collectable vintage 60’s bus blinds, vibrant flowers by Jean Picton, classic still-life pieces by Julia Sterland and many others themes and styles. |

The One Day Art and Antiques Fair
As a special event for the day, the Gold Medallist Athlete and acclaimed sculptor Donald Brown was also there creating a large relief sculptur entitled A Sporting Chance for Peace (in alliance with the BBC). The thrilling part of this project was the fact that on the day, any member of the public was given the opportunity to place a small ‘peace’ of clay onto the sculpture, thereby becoming part of the creative process and being able to support social and environmental peace. The complete creation of A Sporting Chance for Peace Sculpture will be available online during the months leading to the 2012 Olympic Games at www.theglobalgallery.org. The range of works on display also included a few coveted pieces by Rolf Harris and Jack Vettriano. All in all, a fantastic 2012 start for the Herts Art world. by DENISE BOWSER
