Spectacular Quilts by Gail Lawther
Mandarin Duck - by Gail Lawther
Hertfordshire, UK, 2 February 2009 - Hertfordshire Visual Arts Forum invites renowned quilt designer, maker and author Gail Lawther to speak at their first meeting of 2009.
Gail will explain her techniques and methods to members and guests of the county-wide arts organisation at the University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield on Tuesday 24th February at 7.30pm in Room A161, Lindop Building, UH.
Gail fell in love with fabric and threads when she was very young, and has always been drawn to patterns and textures from her surroundings and the environment. At school Gail preferred drawing patterns in her sketch book to class work!
After spending the first ten years of her working life as an editor, Gail took the plunge and has made her living creating beautiful quilts ever since. Together with her graphic designer husband Chris, Gail also creates books for other craftspeople and needle-workers.
Gail says, "Quilting has come a long way from the days when it was just used to make bedcovers and the occasional teacosy or waistcoat; modern quilting is as fantastic as any other display of contemporary art or craft. I work in lots of different quilting techniques, combining them with other textile skills such as embroidery, fabric painting and embellishment, but I'm particularly known for a technique called Stained Glass Patchwork. The technique lends itself very well to spectacular, bold, modern designs as well as more traditional ones. I consider myself incredibly fortunate to earn my living by doing what I love best - playing with fabric and thread.
Gail continues, “For my HVAF presentation I’m going to try and give an insight into my ways of working and developing designs, and the fun I have putting quilts together.”
All those who’d like to see some of Gail’s work and hear her talk about her passion can attend for £3, payable on the door. There’s no charge for HVAF members.
